Dental Crowns

When your tooth is severely decayed, broken, or weakened from former dental procedures, our dentists at Aesthetic Dentistry Associates can help reinforce your tooth’s strength and protect it from further damage with a dental crown. Each crown is custom-made to fit your unique tooth’s appearance, so your restoration will give you a beautiful smile you can enjoy for years to come.

What Are Dental Crowns?

dental Crown
A dental crown, also commonly known as a cap, is a customized dental restoration that is placed over your natural tooth to restore its previous strength, shape, size, and function. Our dentists may recommend a dental crown if your tooth has suffered significant damage or decay. This can occur from dental trauma, a cavity, several previous dental procedures, infection, bite irregularities, and more.

Dental crowns are also used to support a dental bridge, and to top off a dental implant. No matter its use, a dental crown is designed to create a natural-looking dental restoration that resembles the beauty of your smile.

Getting a Dental Crown

If you require a dental crown, Dr. Umansky will begin by taking an impression of your teeth. This impression will then be sent to a dental laboratory, where it will be used to design and create a customized dental crown. While you wait for your crown, our dentists will remove the damaged portions of you tooth and provide you with a temporary crown. In most cases, it takes about two weeks for your permanent crown to be completed and sent back to our office.

Once we receive your permanent crown, we will remove your temporary restoration and place your permanent one over the remaining structure of your natural tooth. Our dentists will verify that your crown fits correctly with your bite, make any necessary adjustments, and cement it into place. Finally, we will polish your crown to give it a natural appearance.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are three main types of dental crowns that you can choose from for your restoration:

  • Metal or gold
  • Metal fused with porcelain
  • Porcelain

In most cases, our dentists recommend that you choose a porcelain dental crown, as they provide the most natural-looking appearance and are highly durable. These types of crowns are able to support the bite force of the back teeth, allowing you to maintain proper chewing abilities, while also maintaining the beauty of your smile. Before your treatment begins, however, Dr. Umansky will work with you to determine if porcelain is the right choice for you.
