The Foundations of Sedation Dentistry

Posted .

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using various sedatives to ease the patient during dental procedures to minimize pain felt and remove any anxiety they may have during treatment. If you suffer from any stress or anxiety, your dentist can administer a variety of treatments to help relax you and prepare you for any treatments you may need.

One of the most common forms of sedatives people know about are inhaled forms. This includes gas treatments using oxygen and nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas. Laughing gas can help calm and relax a patient and is the only known form that makes it possible for a patient to drive themselves home safely after treatment.

Another type is those given intravenously. When sedatives are injected directly into your veins, it is fast acting and can be easily manipulated to give a dosage and treatment for whichever level of sedation is necessary.

Another form of sedation is oral sedation given in pill form. This normally takes a long time to kick in, so it is usually applied up to an hour before any procedures are performed. Dosage can be adjusted as necessary for a relaxing feel up to putting the patient to sleep.

The heaviest form of sedation is general anesthesia and deep sedation. With the use of concentrated forms of anesthesia, dentists can put patients to sleep for long periods of time, in which they will remain asleep until the sedative wears off.
